Roger Vs Federer: Let The Debate Begin!
In this modern age of tennis, no one is more popular or better skilled than Roger Federer. He has won a record breaking 15 grand slams and the crazy thing is that he is only 28. He is in the prime of his career and still has a good couple of years in him. So the question I want to ask everyone is that is Roger Federer the best to ever play the sport of tennis?
Roger is a relatively young player and has already broken the grand slam singles title’s record. Considering that Agassi was still playing well into his 30s, you have to assume that Roger still has plenty of gas left in the tank. So who knows how many more titles he will win. On top of that he has holds the record for making it to the semi-finals in every grand slam for the past five years. This is ridiculous feat to achieve and almost unheard-of. However, in spite of all his accomplishments, which are many, I still think it is too early to give him the title as best ever. In order to determine the best, you have to take a lot of factors into consideration. One thing that becomes apparent when you look at Federrer is the lack of competition that he faces. No one in this era of tennis has proved themselves to be worthy of being anything more than ordinary. The exception to this is Rafael Nadal, who has given Federer his share of runs and has actually beaten him more times in their head to head match up. But besides Nadal, there has literally been a bunch on nobodies who have been trying to take down Federer. Now I don’t know much about the old days, but I was an active tennis watcher in the 90s and I have to say the competition was much tougher back then. There was Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Borris Becker, Stefan Edberg, Jim Courier,Yevgeny Kafelnikov, Patrick Rafter, just to name a few. All these great champions faced off against each other, making the task of winning just one title oh so difficulty. The competition back then was no doubt much tougher than it is now and so you have to believe that Roger would not have had such success against those hard nose legends of the 90s. He might have still been able to win just as many grand slams, it just would have been a lot harder. So before calling him the best ever, we need to remember that competition plays a huge factor in ones success and clearly there hasn’t been much of that in Roger’s carrier. With that being said, Roger already has had an incredible career and will no doubt continue to win championships in the future. By the end of his career, it might become too hard to argue against him being the best ever. However until that time come, we need to be patient and hold off on crowning him as king of kings. Federer the best? Debate it now!
